Lecture 1 – Prof. Stefano Barabino – Immunology of the Ocular Surface and Dry Eye Disease
Prof. Stefano Barabino explores the immunology of the ocular surface and its central role in dry eye disease. He explains why dry eye should be understood as a disease of the entire ocular-surface system—not simply an alteration of the tear film—and examines how homeostasis, parainflammation, chronic inflammation, immune-cell activation, ageing and oxidative stress contribute to its development and progression.

Lecture 2 – Prof. Ahmed Assaf – Refractive Surgery and Dry Eye: Case-Based Decision-Making
Prof. Ahmed Assaf examines the complex relationship between refractive surgery and dry eye disease through two detailed clinical cases. The lecture demonstrates how ocular-surface irregularities can reduce visual quality, affect diagnostic measurements and complicate surgical planning.

Lecture 3 – Prof. Sihem Lazreg Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: From Pathophysiology to Treatment
Prof. Sihem Lazreg presents a practical and comprehensive review of meibomian gland dysfunction, from its underlying pathophysiology to diagnosis and treatment. She explains the different forms of MGD and examines the roles of gland obstruction, hyperkeratinization, inflammation, microbial factors, altered meibum and the vicious circle connecting MGD with evaporative dry eye disease.

Lecture 4 – Prof. Ahmed Assaf – Artificial Tears and Beyond: A Broader Approach to Dry Eye Treatment
Prof. Ahmed Assaf moves beyond symptomatic lubrication to present a broader, individualized approach to dry eye treatment. He reviews the evolution of dry-eye definitions and explains the interconnected roles of tear-film hyperosmolarity, inflammation, tear-film instability and meibomian gland dysfunction. He also discusses the characteristics of an effective artificial tear, with particular attention to hypo-osmolar, preservative-free formulations containing sodium hyaluronate.
